Cacheopedia – Wiki for Geocaching

Filed under:
— Team DEMP @ 6:51 pm

Came across a caching website I hadn’t yet seen before called Cacheopedia.com. The site is a wiki whose purpose is to create an online encyclopedia / reference / survival guide for the sport of geocaching. It is a source for geocaching FAQs, articles, definitions, guides, and a whole lot more.

I think if folks put some effort into it, adding pieces they are most comfortable with, the site itself might become an excellent resource for new and old-time geocachers alike.

Check it out at Cacheopedia.com, register for an account and add some info to the wiki.

A new podcast and a new cache type!

Filed under:
— Team DEMP @ 12:23 pm

We now have a 3rd geocaching related podcast and the first MP3 based PodCache was placed and approved on Geocaching.com.

I received a comment to a blog posting on the last podcast I listed. The comment indicated a 3rd geocaching related podcast that was available to listen to. So last night, I downloaded the podcast to my iPod and listened to it this morning on the way to work.

First, the site for all of this is http://www.podcacher.com.

The 2 hosts of the PodCache are a husband and wife caching team that go by the name of iTrax and FoxTail who reside in San Diego, CA.

Their initial podcast, 12 minutes long, introduced themselves and reviewed some caches they have enjoyed.

What they also did was create a PodCache (which is their 2nd podcast). The concept is to track down a cache by listening to the MP3 podcast which gives the hints to the cache location from the posted parking coordinates. It is meant to be listened to as you track down the cache. The cache is GCPNWV – The 1st PodCache.

I think they have created a new class of caches. Maybe it’ll be worthy of it’s own cache icon at some point. It definitely is an interesting twist on what might be nothing more then an ordinary urban/suburban cache.

I traveled to San Diego a few times on business, but I’ve recently switched jobs. I hope to get out to SD again to try this new cache type.

Check out and subscribe to this new PodCacher podcast along with the other geocaching related podcasts. See CacheCast and GeoRadio for info on the other 2 geocaching related podcasts.

Another Geocaching Podcast

With iTunes 4.9 and their podcast support/directory, I became aware of a 2nd podcast related to geocaching. The podcast is called CacheCast and is created by Steve Sande (aka pdantic) who resides in Colorado.

The RSS feed for the podcast is available at http://cachecast.podbus.com

The latest podcast started with a U2 song containing the lyrics “and I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” which is very appropriate for us geocachers :-)

Check it out along with http://www.georadio.org for another geocaching related podcast.

GeoRadio – Podcasts on Geocaching

Filed under:
— Team DEMP @ 5:49 pm

GeoRadio.org is a new site that has been launched. Since it’s new, there’s not a lot of content yet, but they now have 2 podcasts you can listen to. Obviously the content is geocaching related. Though the hosts are from Mississippi, they are looking for anyone to participate, so if you have a story you think others would appreciate, give them a call.

A podcast is basically an audio version of a blog. They are MP3 files so you can play them on your computer, on your iPod or other MP3 player.

The first MP3 file is a little over 7MB (low res version is 3.6MB) and 31 mins in length. The second MP3 file is 6.25MB and 27 mins in length.

Check GeoRadio.org out if you want something to listen to on your commute or while you’re surfing.

GPXchange.com – Interesting New Site

Filed under:
— Team DEMP @ 8:04 pm

GPXchange.com is a new site I was sent a link to. GPXchange is a central database for sharing location-based information contained within GPX (GPS eXchange format) files. Registered users can upload and store their files privately, or make them publicly available for download or viewing by anyone with internet access.

As files are uploaded, GPXchange automatically produces detailed maps and elevation profiles of the uploaded GPX data and provides tools that allow contributors to include photographs and detailed descriptive information relevant to their files.

GPXchange looks like it has a lot of potential to become a great resource for, among many groups, us geocachers. Take it for a little spin and make sure you bookmark it for future reference.
