Go on a scavenger hunt with Geocaching

In a relatively local (to me any way) paper comes a basic intro to geocaching article referencing NJ cachers and NJ caches.

There are hundreds of stashes in the Pinelands alone, from ones hidden right off the road to others that require a canoe or hip waders.

“The popularity does seem like it’s been growing over the past couple of years,” said Henrich, 53, who along with Earley, works at Lockheed-Martin, and is active with a group called South Jersey Geocaching.

The first cache for Earley and Henrich on a recent Sunday was called “Sammy the Snake.” (Most caches have names that hint to what can be found, or a clue to help with location.)

Driving through Wharton State Forest using the GPS compass, coordinates and map, the Jeep got closer to the target. This one didn’t require a lot of walking and within a few minutes, the camouflage-covered plastic canister with a rubber snake on top was located under some small logs.

http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3333Changes made from version 6.11.6 to 6.12.0:

* Changed the default file format to GDB version 3.

* Added web links. This feature allows user created internet search options to appear on context menus. These search options can use either location or name information.

* Added a MiniMap.

* Added new waypoint symbols (contacts, geocache, hunting, etc.).

* Added support for multiple links on waypoints, routes, and tracks.

* Added additional guidance for the user when clicking on the “View in Google Earth” menu item.

* Added support for writing waypoints, routes, and tracks to SD cards for new chart plotters.

* Enhanced the driving directions page in the route dialog to provide additional statistics.

* Added two options to the routing preference “Try to Avoid” list: ferries and seasonal road closures.

* Added support for multi-line comments for waypoints.

* Added a transfer preference to specify if (and which) serial ports should be searched for Garmin devices. This should solve problems for users that have badly behaved internal modems that cause MapSource to hang.

* Added the ability to join tracks from the Tracks page.

* Added track color to the list on the Tracks page.

* Changed the behavior of the track draw tool to populate the elevation in tracks if the map product has DEM elevation data.

* Changed several feature symbols (mountain peak, city, and airport) to be smaller so they don?t obscure as much of the map. This only applies when the large symbol size is selected.

* Adjusted the layout of several preference pages for improved usability.

* Changed the behavior of several dialogs to ignore the degree symbol in user provided coordinate strings.

* Fixed an issue when selecting map sets larger than 4 GB in size.

* Fixed an issue with saving files to offline network drives.

* Fixed an issue with preserving line feeds inside of comments in GPX files.

Things are not what they seem with a ‘liar’s cache’

Filed under:
— Team DEMP @ 6:05 am

A very well written article from a journalist, Lisa Brainard, a geocacher that as best I can tell goes by the name of lizs. Here’s a snippet from the article and a link to it.

This past year I found out about some-thing called “liar’s caches.” While many finders of liar’s caches swear by them, some have certainly sworn at them. I find the whole premise just a bit disturbing.

I first found out about the cache called “The Gauntlet… Let the Games Begin” when a group of Minnesotans made plans to find it last fall. Some friends wondered if I wanted to go.

For this Gauntlet cache, logs talked about needing hip waders, tons of maps, emergency gear, et-cetera, etcetera. It seemed each log was crazier than the next, with worsening inju-ries and lost items reported. I won-dered, “Is this cache real?” a ques-tion also asked in a forum. Some-one answered he’d been assured the cache was real.

So therein lies my dilemma. While the cache was real, it was an easily found cache. There were no low and high roads. The person placing it apparently wanted to get groups to go there, perhaps meet up for a meal before the “big quest” and then also take the groups off to hunt other area caches after the simplistic Gauntlet had been found.

It’s the ‘bomb’: Old cars mark practice target

Filed under:

I thought this was an interesting article worth letting others know about. The “bomb” in the title doesn’t, thankfully, mean the same as we’ve seen too often associated with geocaching.

It’s an enjoyable read about a trip out to the Badlands of South Dakota.
